Can mantids taste?

I was just wondering can mantids taste their food. Last time when I was feeding my chinese it striked at a fly but it flew away and it was chewing away at my bedsheets. It also eats the screen i use to cover the top. For example, if he catches a bug at the top he'll keep eating through it until he reaches the screen and he'll chew through it. Oh yeah, and he's really addicted to bedsheets.
