What the common name is for either of these?

And any further info..

Polyspilota griffinii praying mantis

Do you have any information to aid in Identifying this species Christian.

enlightenment you should steer away from common names, there are a few common names floating around concerning Pseudempusa pinnapavonis such 'eye spotted mantis' which is rather dull, Thailand 'budwing mantis' and Giant Eyed Mantis.

In my opinion species names are generally a better option even if you struggle to pronounce them.

Cheers.

Lee

I have heard of these common names

Polyspilota griffinii praying mantis - African stick mantis

Pseudempusa pinnapovonis Mantis - Thai budwing (i may have actually started this here)

But as Lee said, it is better to use scientific name when you want to iddentify the species or it gets confusing. I use common name to give an idea for beginners but usually ends up showing the pics instead...... as usual, a photo speaks a thousand word.

Hi.

I recently heard about Polyspilota griffinii to be in stock, but did never see any of those. Polyspilota are quite difficult to determine and it may well be that it is a common P. aeruginosa. This species occurs throughout central and south Africa and the chance is rather high that it is this one. However, I would like to have some dead ones to clarify this.

You have to use the original description and several keys for ID.

Regards,

Christian
