These two mantids are from the same ooth. The small one has been loose in my room living on plants in my box turtle enclosure since the day after being born. He catches loose flies and every now and then I feed him a fly.

Looks like the smaller one is 2-3 molts behind. It is amazing how mantis can delay their growth and molting when food is scarce. Anyway, it proved that mantis grow faster when being fed more often compared to the less often one. Although occasionally, i have similar issue with mantis growth difference eventhough keeping them in the same condition, to as many as 2 molts behind.

ha nice pic! the little fella must be scared out of his/her wits lol

it'd be interesting to see if it's true that the mantis that reaches adulthood first, despite having consumed far more food/calories, will have a longer lifespan (of course, a more accurate experiment will be done with more than just 1 couple).

-Hello, really is very notable that devolopment difference.

-What species is?

-And so, the smallest mantis may die by older maintaining both these larvae-stage and size without moulting if still having their same living conditions like already?

-Thanks, best regards. Roberto.

Wow, the big one looks like it's made out of plastic. The color is so uniform and pale. I'm surprised that it's not freaking out that something is on it.

The size difference is really startling, much more that I would expect.

A locust walked all over my mantis recently and he wasn't bothered, he didn't even try to eat it although its gone now so he must have got revenge later.
