does the carolina mantid require a period of diapause, for example about a month in the refrigerator in a Ziploc bag, in order for them to hatch? I found the wild ooths in Valdosta, in South Georgia, if that helps.

You can if you want to as they are a temperate species. ...I thought this was answered in the other thread. People that have experience with the genus say that it does not need diapause, but a cold period can be provided to delay hatching.

Personally, I am a strong believer in trying to mimic conditions that the organism experiences in the wild when keeping anything (be it plants or animals). So, I would do it.

While a diapause is not truely needed by this species, there is nothing wrong with storing it in the fridge. The ooth WILL hatch without the cold period. But you might get a better hatch rate with stronger nymphs if you do chill the ooth for several weeks. When in doubt, try to duplicate the environmental conditions of the area you found the ooth! If it gets cold there, chill the ooth.

The carolina ooth i have hatched out more and stronger nymphs when going through a good period of diapause. whereas the one kept in the room temperature hatch out few per day for 2-3 weeks.
