http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=1253I have tried to search on this with no luck. I found this ooth the other day on a mantid hunt. How long can it take to hatch? Do I have to do anything special to it, like diapause. It doesn't get very cold here, or even consistently below 40 degrees, for more than a day. I am pretty confused about it, cause that I read that people refrigerate these ooths. If I just mount it and mist it, like I did with my chinese oothecae, will it still hatch. I am hoping for the quickest means possible.

I was about to say that this time of year it has already hatched months ago. However, that one looks unhatched. Perhaps in FL the mantids are already laying their ooths? Plus, it is on a green twig. There is nothing special you need to do. Put it in the proper container and treat it like a mantis and just wait. Do the same as you would do for a chinese mantis ooth.

Thanks Rick. This ooth feels totally different than a hatched Carolina ooth that I found earlier in the year. Looks different too. This one is softer and it was a little sticky when I found it. I have no doubt that there was at least one laying female out there. I wish I would have found a female, or any mantis. This ooth stuck out like a sore thumb. The place where I looked has trees and brush that is covered in a vine like a canopy, there are lots of creepys in there so I was trying to keep my fearless kid out. :sweatdrop: I was afraid to go inside the tent of vines, and I am pretty sure that is where the mantids are. I had at least 3 assasin bugs land on me and I have heard that they hurt! If I wasn't such a sissy, I probably would have a few mantids.

I can tell it hasn't hatched by the top of it. Also, being on that plant that is not woody is also a clue it is fresh. That part of the plant is newer growth.

You have great observation skills, I was sure that the ooth was new when I found it. It is very small, and that part of the vine couldn't be more than a few days old. The ooth can't be more than a third of an inch long, and the part of the vine that it is on, was no more than 2 millimeters wide. How long does it usually take for one of these ooths to hatch, if kept at room temp from when it is layed?

Generally 4-8 weeks but could be longer.
