Hello,

I bought some Chinese ooths a while ago (1.5 months), neither have hatched (package says 2 weeks although I know its about 4). I have been spraying em twice a week and I keep em in the sunlight for a few hours a day. I was impatient and worried so I did slice one open. I'm pretty sure it dried up, the inside looks like there are black rice granules. Are there any tips on future ootheca treatment? I read the pinned topic at the top of the board and i seemed to do all the same. Im new to this and really don't want to lose anymore ooths in the future. But of course that's inevitable. I have an uploaded pic of how it looks like. Thanks for any advice!

looks like they all are dead or dried up and you might of gotten ripped off and should be careful where you buy them from or buy them from someone who knows what they are doing in raising them!

You might want to hold on to the other one for a little while longer, but who knows how long they've been sitting in the garden center, it might very well be a dud also.

I think that the major problem is that you bought these in July (the Ebay ooth season ends in June) and as Amanda Lynn suggested, they had probably been kicking around in the store for a while and in a wholesaler's fridge before that. These ooths are harvested from the wild and stand a good chance of being fertile. Next time, just buy them earlier, or get c.b. ooths from forum members.

OK thanks for all the help. So they must have just dried out over time? I read somewhere you can also tell if an ooth is fertile by slicing the top off and liquid comes out? (i think insectstore.com). is this true?

That's what I've heard, but if the ooth is fertile, you are killing viable eggs. I see no problem in leaving an ooth and misting it until it is about 6 months old, before chucking it, though there are exceptions to this, particularly among ooths that go into diapause.

Pooh, i honestly dont have that much patience. Although that may change since im just getting into this hobby. It kinda sucks if theyre all gonna be like the one in the picture; When do you recommend chucking em out if they dont hatch?

When they are black and dried up they are dead.

You can buy sub adults or adults from this site or other sites and raise your own chinese ooths instead of buying them and that way you know exactly that they will be fertile and have close to a 100 percent chance of hatching and its prob better to raise your own then buy them and this way you will know that you got the real deal and even post your wants or such in the classifieds here in case you decide to try raising the nymphs and or sub adults yourself!

Man that bites! Hopefully my Chinese will be making babies soon! Let me know if you want some of mine and maybe I can hook you up! :)

I don't chuck them out.... I have a pile of them in a small drawer in the bug room, hehe! :p
Haha! Me too! A while back, when I was checking the feasibility of using denture adhesive for ooths, I stuck a Chinese ooth on my bathroom mirror. That was months ago, and it still greets me every morning:

Hmmm.... not a bad idea, I wouldn't think. Though I'm sure you don't mist it every day either. You might want to experiment and try it... and see if it eventually falls off due to the misting. ;)
