i have recently raised a number of tenodera from the ooth - getting nymphs to L3/4 and then releasing in the garden. very low mortatlity rate (suprisingly) and lost only 1 to moult, 1-2 to cannibalism before separation.

i kept 4 as pets. the first died after clearly becoming blind at around L4. the second also at L4/5 - but was never very robust or a good hunter.

of my remaining two - male moulted to adult and is healthy. my very active female (of course my favorite) died suddenly yesterday (she was subadult).

she was clearly about to moult (reduced appetite/activity and coloration), but otherwise fine. great hunter, very active. she had a funny position yesterday, head/neck turned at a very slight angle. i woke up this morning to find that she died. :(

i realize that there could be any number of factors but it seems like a high mortatlity rate to me for a captive group. the crickets are very healthy, the humidity and air flow is good (illustrated by the fact that i only lost one nymph to a moulting issue). i can find no other visible factors.

any thoughts? especially for the female - it seems strange that she would perish after 2+ months of great development and no other signs of sickness/injury.

Sorry to hear about that :( I know Chinese tend to have a high mortality rate but that's as nymphs. Maybe u can re-find one of the mantids u let go of as nymphs?
