I want to get some climb-proof coating in my aquarium because the mantis inside keeps on climbing up to the lid, out of sight, near some burning light. Plus, it's a long fall down. I just want to maybe coat a thin layer near the top of the enclosure so it will stay on the plants given to it instead. I read a long time ago that people had that stuff coated so that ants couldn't escape, so I though I could maybe use it.

I tried Google to find this, but couldn't find it. Does anyone know the product name, and where to get it? It's like supposed to be sprayed on or painted on, some climb proof coating you can put.

I'm not sure about the spray coating, never heard of that one.

Is it an option to put a mesh in between the tank and the lid that is too fine for the mantid to crawl through?

I understand that you don't want the mantid to be singed on a bulb, I wouldn't worry about the long drop though, unless its a gravid female.

They use petroleum jelly for roaches, or some commercial stuff. But you don't want to do that Jas! They love to hang at the top and bask in the bulb! I have the same problem, beautiful enclosures that appear to have no creature in them. They moult from the lid too. Let 'em hang! :)

I agree with Precious. I have tried several different enclosures and no matter how big and spacious they are, the mantids always like it at the very top, hanging upside down. If you need the light for a heat source, you might want to consider getting a fixture that is not attached to the lid so the mantid won't get hurt from being to close to the heat source.

Let 'em hang! :)

I worried about my guy getting scorched. He knows, though. I was rearranging the bugs and the lamp was closer to the enclosure and he stayed a few inches away. Now the lamp is further from the enclosure and he's smack under it.

What you are looking for is called Fluon. Bioquip sells it under the name "Insect-a-Slip Insect Barrier-Fluon". It is rather expensive though. $20.70 for a 4 oz bottle. I just used petroleum jelly on my ant tanks. But I agree with the others, you probably shouldn't bother trying to stop your mantids from hanging out on the lid.

i reckon it will only get scorched if it has no other option than to be very close to bulb, but seeing as its got the rest of the tank, i dont think it would choose to be close enough to get scorche,d if you know what i mean.

Thanks everyone. Hmmm....I still have to think about it. The top is very slippery, and the mantis inside keeps on falling. If I were to put a molting one there, it would probably fall. I could put mesh there....So....
