Hello, I have a question that obviously differs from university to university. But it's one that I haven't been able to find online and am about to email this question to various colleges I'm interested in. I know that pet dogs, cats, birds, and even hedge hogs are not allowed in the dorms of most universities, but how about insects? Specifically, a tarantula? I know a lot of universities allow fish, I assume this is due to their whole life being spent in a tank, and not making noise or being dangerous. So by that nature, I'm wondering if insects could apply as well. My chilean rose is only 5-6 years old, and she can live up to 30, and even though I can loan her to family to take care of, I'd rather not. I know this will be second hand information, but I am still interested in what anyone's experiences are Thank-you.

University of Oklahoma is a no go, but Oklahoma State has promise. Their policy is a little more obscure and open to exotics, so long as they're contained in an aquarium less than a certain size. May not be where you want to go, but I just thought I'd pass it along! I checked with the other 2 major universities that are here in Oklahoma City, and they were both a no go too.Good luck!

Agreed. I guess the answer hinges on, "how effectively can you hide it?"

And of course a very tolerant roommate.

my university allows " non-flesh eating fish" only lol. But I kept a puffer fish last year that counted as "flesh-eating" and my RA didn't care. A tarantula would be super easy to keep. Just put its container in a box or under your bed or something. I think you would be fine. When a pet does get caught in the dorms here, they give you time to get rid of it. So worst case scenario you could probably lend it to a family member lol or hide it better. ;)
