I am posting some pix of some cool spideys I find here in my backyard.

This one is tiny! Colored maroon with a brick tint to it. Very oddly shaped, like a widened arrow.

This one is sick! It reminds me of one of my mantid species Popa Spruca. This spider forms a cryptic pose and almost appears as a weird twig when closer to the branch.

Not sure what species? Yellow with lots of white on it's back. Orb weaver of some sort.... ?

I love this kind, I find a ton of these in my area! Very pretty electric greens with amazing shiny silvers! Sorry for my camera and camera skills lol.

Bottom one is an orchard orb weaver. There's some of those in my mom's tomato garden. In case you're not joking about the second to last pic, that's a male earwig with HUGE pincers.

I see a lot of small earwigs here in maryland, they are gross. Do you know the origin of the name? I don't get why they are called that.

Oh, come on, they're cool! Just crickets w/o modified legs and a long abdomen with huge pincers. My sister found a cicada skin today with two earwigs in it, and some earwig eggs. The legend (Origin of its name) is the gross part, even though it's not true. Click Malti's link.

I actually want to make a culture of earwigs, just to observe the maternal behavior of the females. I just seldom find any when I have a container handy. I know of someone who has kept some, and the fact that the female protects, and fights for her young is interesting to me.

On the other hand, I have seen earwigs infest a home, similar to pest cockroaches. This was in the mountains of North Carolina. There were hundreds of them in the kitchen drawers of the place, and they do have quite an odor that can be smelled as soon as one walks in the home. :pinch:

Fortunately for me, I have never seen an infestation in S.Florida.
