Copper will kill any invertebrate really fast, it's sometimes used in fertilizer. It's much cheaper and safer to buy soil without any fertilizer in it. Also, the nitrates which are beneficial for plants are actually a BIG water pollutant for things that aren't plants.

I have a crawfish, she's called an electric blue lobster. I notice that even if the nitrates in my tank get above 0 even a little she starts to become sluggish. It doesn't help that she's in with goldfish haha but I notice her perking right up after water changes and such so id say pollutants like fertalizer are a definite no no
