I'm trying to mate my giant Asians. Today, the male finally seems interested. He attempted to mount, but the female attack, so I had to separate momentarily and now I'm letting him try again.

Before he mounted, he was like having a seizure. He was shaking faster than I've ever seen a mantis shake before. He was blurry it was so fast. He did that for a minute or so, then he jumped and mounted her. Has anyone ever seen behavior like that before? I wonder what the reason for it is? Maybe he was trying to convince himself to do it. Bravery.

My ghost can shake faster than any of my other mantids. Normally she won't, but sometimes she will. Maybe if there's a stronger wind than normal they shake faster to better mimic leaves blowing in the wind. I'm not really sure what it is.

It's the pheromones smacking him in the nads!

I've seen what your describing a few times, maybe 5-6, seizure is good wordage for it, did the head turn all around and he was biting the air, kind of like out of some horror flick? It def freaked me out the first time I saw it! But I have no clue what causes it either? Kind of creepy though...

I know what you're talking about. It's like defensive, camouflage shaking. My ghosts and oxy males do it. Just this was crazy shaking, like the title says. He was literally blurry, he was shaking faster than my eyes could perceive. It was scary look, but also really impressive. Then he pounced on the female. It was cool to watch, too bad he was unsuccessful. I hope I can get a video of it next time I try to make them.

I filmed a male Mantis Religiosa doing the same thing before jumping on the female. it seemed more like courtship to me, though

Clearly you did not see the mini taser the girl pulled out and used on him. Remember boys, no means no.

Now he seems afraid of the female. He less than 2 weeks old, so he's probably not ready, but I've been trying every day.

I gave a superworm to my male giant asian and he did the same dance after it bit him! I read somewhere they do this jiggle dance out of fear.

He certainly did!
