So my only male has finally become an adult, but his final molt was flawed. His wings are all mangled and going every which way. He's been an adult for about a week now so I figured, what the heck, let's see what happens if I try to mate him. I put the female on a log and feed her a cricket, then I put the male behind her. He doesn't do anything so I nudge him. He'll finally approach and try to fly onto the female's back, but because of his messed up wings, he can't. This wild flapping freaks out the female and she bolts. I try this with another female, same thing, the blur of wings sends them running. :(

Maybe you would have better success if you amputate his wings. I had to do it to my Chinese female, and it was pretty simple and she didn't seem to mind. Considered that?

Ok, I snipped his wings, I hope mantis wings are like human hair where if cut, there's no pain. I'll attempt mating him again next weekend.

I hope it works. It seemed like it didn't hurt mine when I took her wings off. Did your guy seem to react?

Yeah, he reacted before and after the cut. I'm guessing he just didn't like me holding his wing, didn't notice any flinching or anything that looked like it caused him pain when I cut them.
