out of curiosity if you did cross breed a mantis species with another wont the males if they hatched and managed to survive be only infertile and the females fertile or does it not work that way like other animals like ligers or tigons? I know they not insects but only the females of those crossed species could mate and not the males!

Drum roll! Here we go again!

The F2 generation of a species cross cannot interbreed. In the highly unlikely event that one was able outbreed, the offspring would be neither fish nor fowl. Destroy them, before you wreak havoc on the population in culture!

By a curious chance, there is a post Vergillian epic on just this subject, whose protagonist had a name much like yours (though I'm sure that that is purely fortuitous), Dumbassia Major. This young man persisted with a cross breed, much as you describe and was finally devoured by an angry Great Mantis Goddess (Blessed be Her Name). Off hand, I can only remember the last four lines which recount how she devoured him:

Very slowly, by degrees,

First his ankles, then his knees,

'Til he was eaten, every bit.

No wonder he detested it!

If his grisly end deters you from similar folly, then it will not have been in vain!

Remember what curiosity did to the cat? ^_^
