Decided to see if the Asians I got would mate

Made sure the female ate 2 crickets .... male did not want food, but offered some honey and he ate a little. I put them into the 10 gal tank and waited. finally went to bed with the idea that hey .. what happens happens ..

This morning he is still alive. hung a cricket from a string in front of the female and she eventually took it and ate. Hopefully she will be fed enough to not want to eat the little guy.

I know he see's her, but so far I have not noticed him trying to get close. I dont want to force them to get close, so it is a waiting game.

Thanks, I actually read this about an hour ago and was thinking .. hmmmmm maybe i better seperate them for now ... owning a dog (see avatar) it is not wise to let them roam about. It would only take her a second to kill or eat them like she did to all the cicada we had this year .... I will move them today and try again tomorrow after i feed her and try to feed him ..

I have two cats so I know what you mean. If you must cage them make sure they are connected and mating before you do. You cannot sit and watch them the whole time because most mantids mate for many hours. I leave them free in a room with the door shut or I will put them in a very large cage so he can have some space.

Thanks rick .. i may try it in the downstairs bathroom .. toilet seat down of course .... once they hook up that is .... then check them the next morning ... in a half bath he should be able to avoid her .. if not .. well ... he did his job :lol:

AHHHH .. okies .. I shall do just that. I was not so much in a hurry as worried about one of them not making it. I guess the male is smaller and 1 cricket a day (sometimes 1 every other day) is enough for him. She eats 2 or 3, but I have to help since she is not a chase it down type mantis.

please can u show me your gain asian mantis..i have 1..a female..my god does that thing eat..she can eat 2 full size crickets a day untill her stomach looks like its going to pop..lol.iv had her from a baby..she is so soft its unreal..i make sure i pick my mantis up ofmr baby.this way its use to me..do u do this>?oh show me a pic of your female if u can..thanks..and the pic if pos..

You are worried if she will pop, she won't his is not fat like yours yet. She is still skinny as she only turned adult. Yours will lay an ooth anyday now. If you need a male I have them.

LOL .... it is small unless you click on it ... what good is a 10 megapixel camera if you dont waste net space with it ? hehehe
