Does anyone happen to know how long M. religiosa or T. sinensis ootheca must undergo diapause for? I understand that they must go through an over-wintering period but I've also heard of people having ootheca hatch on their christmas trees after unknowingly bringing them into their homes. I have a M. religiosa egg case in a jar outside my house and it would be nice not to have to wait until next spring to hatch it.

I'd wait a few months but if it doesn't hatch when you bring it in, in January, it probably wouldn't hatch in spring either. A jar outside could kill an ootheca even in the dead of winter on a sunny day (even if it doesn't cook, the temperature shift would be too excessive).
