Ameles syriensis... European Dwarf Mantis

Are they old? new?

I ran across a picture of one.. Then did a quick search... I found pics, but didn't find much info about them.

Actually, the European Dwarf Mantis is Ameles Spallanzania.

Ameles Syriensis is only found in Turkey and Syria, border countries between Europe and Asia.

As far as I know, this species lives in the most southern countries of Europe: Portugal, Spain, Italy and Malta. Maybe Greece too, though I do not have the info to back this up.

I live in Portugal very close to the ocean but I never found this species. I suspect they prefer dryer climates inland or close to the Mediterranean sea where the weather is usually warmer for longer periods of time.

OK.. Thank you.. Like I say I could not find much info at all about them.. but I think they are cute... I guess looking up the wrong scientific name is a hindrance.. off to search the right name...

Ok... After further research, with the correct name... conclusion: the European dwarf mantis...

Is mainly appreciated most by photographers... and not talked about much anywhere else

Pretty much

The reason is simple: mantis keeping is rare in Europe. Actually, any kind of exotic pet keeping is not common at all here, so most species native to Europe have no info whatsoever.
