I bought some fruit flies from PetCo last year, and then fed them to my newest mantids from DeShawn. Within a few days, all of my new thistles and Indian flower mantids were dead. I fed them nothing else, and kept them with good heat, humidity, and enclosures. My recommendation is to not buy fruit flies from PetCo for two reasons: 1- they are WAY overpriced; 2- they killed my mantids. Has anyone else had this problem, or did I just get a bad culture?

I breed my own fruit flies now.

I’m sorry about your awful experience.

I do agree that there are many other reputable vendors selling cultures for half the price or less, but I’ve never actually had anything happen that was this bad before. But PetCo isn’t really animal-friendly overall.

I hardly ever go to PetCo anyway, as PetSmart is a bit cheaper anyway. Breeding your own is a lot easier!

Yeah. By the time I realized that it was the fruit flies that killed them, it was too late to get a refund.
