Today a B. mendica male was nabbed by his lover. Half his head and torso were eaten already when I found them, but I snipped him away and attempted a connection. He connected for a few minutes, then was yanked out by the female. She was already mated twice and is on her seventh ooth now, so I'm not too devestated.

I've successfully done this with other species, namely narrow wings, Chinese, and Rhombodera. All three females were fertilized, so my plan has worked in the past.

Has anyone else tried this? Did it work or no?

Chris,

Sorry to hear she ate him. :( But the good news is that he wasn't shooting blanks! (Am I allowed to say that here?) Two of my ooths have hatched. Hopefully yours are fertile, too! Did you let her finish him off?

I have never tried to mate a female with a headless male. I did find that one of my female Rhombo cf stalli mantids bit the head off from the male, and they stayed connected for over 24 hours that way. Now I don't know if he was headless before they started mating. I was happy that she ate the rest of him so that I didn't have to deal with him. Headless mantids still bother me.

I've done it but it isn't easy to do. The males body often moves around too much. But a few times I have managed to line them up right and the males body connected.

yes, usually she starts eating from the side of the thorax, so i cut that part off and allow her to eat that

i put him on her and he tries to connect, though i've never gotten them to connect i came really close
