These are unique, sturdy, and beautiful earrings hand crafted from the elytra of the classic 'green jewel beetle' Sternocera aequisignata. The beetles themselves are a pest species to the Cassia fistula trees where they bore into the roots and later consume leaves in northeast Thailand. They swarm in the thousands on farms of their host plant, much like our Japanese beetles in America. These particular specimens were collected on a 450 acre farm near Lampang. Nothing goes to waste either, as the adults are consumed in a dish called "ma-langtap" where they are fried and the head, wing covers, and legs are removed before eating. Previously the magnificant elytra and pronotum were thrown out but are now being saved for various parts of jewellery.
The earrings themselves are constructed of 8 elytra each, which have been completely sterilized by a heat treatment following an alcohol bath. They are connected by a small silver chain and each wing cover is free-hanging and independant like a chandelier. They are also surprizingly sturdy and would only break in a true accident, like being sat on. Pictures do not bring these earring sets justice, and for the price you cant go wrong!
