Heh, I did a boo-boo. Had to share because it's a funny story. :)

It's been more than three years since I've been in the mantis hobby, and probably longer than that since I've had nymphs in the house smaller than L3. Recently, I bought a Java Shield nymph and a fruit fly culture to keep him/her well-fed. Since I'm not used to the nymph business and ffs, I accidentally fed off all my adults too quickly. But had plentiful pupae thankfully.

BUT, after a day or so, when I didn't see any adults, I thought--I know, let's put them by the heat lamp overnight....

This morning I had a fruit fly population that was....cataclysmic.

ffs culture will go up and down for 1-2 months then die off all together, so start a new culture fom some of the old ones(50 or so) an you will get 2 more months of flies, then you will have endlees ff's for life

for free repeating this every month or so :)

Thanks for the tip, angel :)

Yeah, I went and googled a little more thoroughly and read through the posts here and realized my mistakes. Ah, the joys of learning old skills anew.

though the best part was my roomies face when they woke up in the morning and saw that mass of black flies....priceless, let me tell you.
