Que sera, sera...

I never really trusted communal living among mantids so even with my Ghosts and Creos, I don't keep more than 2 together. With the Creos I tried to match the size of the roommates but they don't always grow equally. With one cage yesterday, even though they were both theoretically well fed, I noticed the smaller one on the cage bottom and the bigger one eying and harassing it. I was busy so I chased the bigger one away and threw in a couple flies in case it was still hungry.

I came back later and found the smaller one on the ground, shedding. I don't know if it started low and fell down, got knocked down by a fly, or never climbed up high because of the threatening big one. It was almost totally out of the old skin and I thought if I could get it up on one of the silk plants to hang from it would be OK. I used long tweezers and tried to gently grab the empty tip of the shed skin and lifted it, dropped it once, and got it onto the silk flower. It was obviously having problems so I moved the whole silk flower out of the cage and gave it room to hang free.

It wasn't until a while later that I realized that the front left walking leg was completely missing and the left claw was clumsy and not working right. I guess there's a good chance that I am responsible for the missing leg; something when I moved it, or the tweezers caught the leg?

The good news is that I have it set up in it's own 32oz cup with sticks and leaves, it's perching properly, and this afternoon it caught and ate a housefly. The left claw moves and works but it is clumsy and hangs slightly out to the side. When catching the fly, it batted it around struggling to get a good grip with the right claw, and then it was fine. The leg probably won't grow back much but I'm hoping that the claw functionality will return.

And it's biggest sibling molted into a winged adult tonight. :)

What instar is the one at that's missing the leg?

One of my ghosts had 3 legs when I got her, she grew back a partial yet very weak leg at L3, managed to lose it again, and then grew another weak, almost transparent leg again at L4. She kept that one and now I believe she's at L5 or L6 and its grown back perfectly. It's maybe 10% smaller than the others, but she's truckin it around the cage no problem.

Hopefully the raptoral claw will correct itself next molt too. Either way, it usually doesn't stop them from eating.

Good luck man!

I'm sorry to hear that your mantis had problems molting :( That's one of my biggest fears!

I am how ever glad that one has grown its wings! I had a few of my African Twig mantids grown their wings last night / this morning! They are so pretty when they make their threatening pose!

It is possible for them to grow back the legs - mine do it all of the time. I had a mantid once who wouldn't move one of her claws, but she was fine again next time she molted ;) I wouldn't worry too much - they can still catch food with one hand. Once I saw a wild praying mantis with two rear legs. I didn't capture him, but I saw him eating a bee, so I assume he was living just fine despite this disability! :)

Ryan - it is probably sub-adult (or possibly sub-sub), so I don't think there are enough sheds to allow the leg to re-grow much.

Bio - the new adult male was staring at it's roommate all afternoon and when I accidentally bumped the cage, it did the raised-wing threat at the other mantis!

Wolfie - it caught and ate another fly while I was watching today (and maybe more when I wasn't watching) so I think it will be OK. Again, I hope the claw function returns on the next shed.

Yeah - catching and eatting is a great sign. I've got L4 Idolos with 2 missing legs. 2 shed later, no new leg growth, but they're still fine. They have their own cage, grow and molt a lot slower than their siblings, but otherwise are completely capable.

Good luck, and keep your humidity above 50%.

'Tripod' continues to feed and do well, even hanging upside down from leaves and sticks like he normally would.

My trick for feeding him is to put a cold-stunned fly on a leaf near him - when the fly wakes up and moves, it gets nailed! He ate a huge BB that way today - his 'normal' adult brother is afraid of BBs.

I say 'he' but I don't know 'Tripod's' gender yet.

post some pictures! maybe people could help you out with sexing Tripod, by the way i love the nick name you have for him.

I stole the name Tripod from others here, thanks.

Tripod continues to climb around and catch his own food - here's a lousy photo of him munching a housefly caught while climbing on a branch. He holds the fly in his good claw with the clumsy left claw hanging off to the side, though he uses both to catch flies and was using both to hold onto the BB that he caught a couple of days ago.

I'm guessing from this photo that 'he' is a 'she'... :)

She's a character alright - climbs where she wants to, sleeps upside-down from the underside of leaves, eats like a champ!

I think she's going to shed to adult today. Typical, she picked a spot fairly low in the cage where she is likely to have problems.

This time I moved her to a clean 32oz cup, empty except for her 2 sticks and wet paper towel on the bottom for humidity. Lots more room to hang down and shed from.

Still hasn't shed yet - won't eat either so I'm keeping the humidity and hydration up and waiting to see what she does...

UPDATE

She finally shed this evening: adult with wings now, did the flip fine, the bad claw seems fixed, and she regenerated almost 3/4" of her missing leg!
