Yesterday, I accidentally knocked George's cage off the counter and onto the floor. There appeared to be no damage (to the mantis, that is- I was completely mortified); she was still just happily munching away at a cricket, despite having been tipped sideways all of a sudden. Closer inspection as I was rearranging her habitat today revealed that her abdomen was flopping; if she was moved sideways or right side up, it would droop, and she was dragging it along as she walked across my hand.

After a few minutes, she settled upside down on my hand while I worked, with her abdomen wiggling slightly. Just normal mantis butt wiggles, so I thought nothing of it, but when I turned her right side up so I could put her back in, it started twitching and flailing violently. Also, she's always had two black lines between the fourth, fifth, and sixth abdominal segments, and red was showing in the middle of them. Her climbing is mildly impaired but she can still hang upside down.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be here? I'm rather confused and a tiny bit worried, but her condition does not appear to be life threatening.

Oh no, doesn't sound very good. If it's eating fine and passing frass normally then it should be ok. The violent twitching sounds concerning though. Sometimes they don't show that they seriously hurt until later, then they pass away. Hopefully that's not the case with yours, keep us updated.

@crabbypatty Already have an update, actually! She just molted, and came out absolutely fine; still haven't been able to check on how floppy her abdomen is, though, because she's still soft and hanging upside down. I'm hoping to handle her tomorrow or the day after and see how she's doing.

George just started showing the same "symptoms" this evening. Perhaps it's a sign that molting is imminent?! :D (in that case, yay final molt tonight!!)
