I ordered some Blue Bottle Fly's from mantisplace.com and there are three flys who seem to be stuck half in their caccon shell. I dunno what to do. It is freaking me out. I tried putting one in its own container and adding water. I am thinking about trying to crack the shells if I get too desperat 2013-02-27 19.09.11.jpge. But how do I avoid this in the future.

Sometimes this happens. I will usually feed them off anyway. The wiggling they do when trying to get out will trigger feeding response from whatever your feeding.

This happens when the pupae get dried out in the fridge and get brittle. The damage is already done, the fly will most likely be weak and unable to fly. You can yank it out of the shell with your fingers or feed it as is.

Spray their container, you plan to hatch them out in, with a little water, which will raise the humidity and help them hatch ;)

I gently hold both fly and shell and pull. I respect my flies but these ones usually get called names. My friend laughs at how silly they look. Like they didn't want to get out of a sleeping bag.

Some you can gently pull out,but with thousands of flies to be hatched this just tends to happen to a few, also keep them humid and they will hatch better and faster I agree

I just give to mantis that way, they get extra food eating the shell, and a lot of times they will drag it behind them and the mantis will notice it better, nothing like taking a little trip with your house so you can rest on the way :tt2:
