Well Saturday I had to attend a funeral (my wife's aunt), and figured why not try to find some fruit flies on the 150+ mile trip (each way) for my ooths I'm hatching.

After calling nearly every pet store from my town to the city I was going to, I found a few places, but by far the best deal was from Chris at Coco Hut Dart Frogs.

Chris sells them for $5 per 32oz container with a producing culture. In the end I bought 1x Drosophila Hydei (large fruit fly), 2x Drosophila Melanogaster (small flies), 1x Turkish Gliders, and 1x Springtails. He gave me a new empty culture and directions to use it, and gave me two more fruit fly cultures near end of their cycle (good to start new ones).

I asked if he would ship, but he said due to the heat or cold packs, and his low sell price it isn't worth it - so sadly no. Anyway if you are in the Lafayette Indiana area, or at one of the reptile shows stop by and see him he's great. Heck, he about got me and my wife sold on a Dart frog before we left, but I'm sticking to just mantises for now. :D

Anyway I now have plenty of feeders for any mantis nymphs that may hatch. I was curious if anyone has any caresheets or details for creating new cultures? I've been reading what I can find but feel a bit lost, as it's hard to say what is accurate when found online (and I don't want to crash all the cultures).

Especially when it comes to the Turkish Gliders - which appear to be a medium sized feeder compared to the fruit flies. It seems that this is a less common feeder so there isn't as much data.

I did however find a great list of various homemade fruit fly recipes (with many that do not require brewers yeast), I found here.

Now that I have Springtails for cleaning my tanks, I went back out in my backyard and found plenty more Isopods to add to my tanks as well. I added about 50 to my mantis habitat earlier and Susanna, my mantis, snatch a isopod and ate it. She also caught a few Hydei that I added in too - although she misses them from time to time as they are so dang small. :D

Dude?.... He gave you fresh empty ones?! That's cool!! Making the medium should be pretty easy enough, there is a sticky post in the " food and feeding" section. You got a nice amount of feeders there, very diverse in diet for the next generation. :D

Yeah just one, complete with dry food that I just add water to. That way I could at least transfer one of the three breeds over before the cultures crash (if I didn't get a hold of some new tubs/build my own for them).

Ha, your right about the sticky (the one and only there) about fruit flies. I guess it was a bit too obvious. Also here is another as pointed out by Peter. Seems like it is as easy as it sounds. :D

Great find!... and very generous... Looks like the ocd has really kicked in... and the wife is on board... bonus!

I was/still am excited about how great of a deal he gave me. As all I could find was the small glass tube/vials for $7 in very limited supply at a few pet stores, before I stumbled across Chris. Yeah well she wasn't excited about all the new "bugs" but is happy I can feed my baby mantis nymphs when they hatch :D

Just stay clear of the spiders and you are set! ...LOL
No worries, she isn't going to allow that to happen :clown:

ahhh, yes...

I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to the significant other there buddy :D

I actually used the D.Hydei vial to kick start my own culture, dumped about 1/4 of the vial into my homemade. Works so far, ive already got teeny tiny maggots and i just started it about 3 days ago.

Glad to see I'm not the only one - I guess it is a good thing as I'd be overrun with too many pets by now otherwise. :D

Great that the fly vial is working out for you! If need be I have access to the vials nearby (30 minute drive) if my cultures crash or I need more flies quick. I may end up getting some at some point.

I mixed some homemade fruit fly meal (and dry cricket feed) tonight, and have it in the fridge. Hopefully tomorrow I can get to transferring the flies/building new cultures as they are about to expire/crash.

The one that has me really curious is the Turkish Gliders as the more I look the less I can find about them. There doesn't appear to be any scientific name anywhere- and best guess is it is a specially bred version of fruit flies based from the Melanogaster. About all I can find is that they are kept and feed by dart frog owners.

Unrelated but I just noticed Susanna had a tiny abdomen as I was feeding her. A quick look in her habitat and I discovered she just laid her 7th ooth today.

Guess she is going for a record - and apparently did not lay a single ooth in the wild before I caught/rescued her.

Ha! That's awesome, glad to hear she's overloading you with ooths :D

I actually live like 5 minutes from 2 pet stores so acquiring any extra needed vials shouldn't be too much of a hassle ;)
