Can fruit flies be refrigerated without killing them? I bought flightless fruit flies and noticed some have wings, I'm concerned about some escaping when I open the container and becoming a pest problem in the house.

I've never tried the refrigerator trick with fruit flies, only house flies... I don't see why it wouldn't work but I'm not sure about it...

You can try the vial trick...

Cut\ drill a hole in the lid of the container, use a vial or something to cover that hole to collect the fruitflies. Use a cotton ball or cork to stuff the hole until Future use.

You can for a few minutes, more then 4 minutes I've read will affect the culture and can kill them all. I don't use the fridge myself. I just tap the sides of the cup to get them off the lid and pour them direct into my mantises tanks using a feeding hole and a funnel.

All three varieties of flies I have actually seem to have wings, they just can't use them and are flightless. Some sellers confuse the words wingless and flightless, but means about the same thing - that they can't fly.

They can however jump and glide some, with some unavoidable escapees, but they die off quick if they do. Only other thing to point out is any uneaten flies can escape from nearly all mantis tanks - as even the larger Hydei can easily squeeze through the common sized screen mesh.

I lift the lid at one side tap a few out close it back up..sure a couple get squished closing the lid again but hey. Oh I forgot to say I tap the top lid a couple times so only the fast ones reach the top ; )

Thanks for the advice everyone. I didn't know about the winged ones not being able to fly.

Eventually even the flightless ones regain the ability to fly.
