I have read that metal screen is bad for Idols as it will break their tarsus (I think?) foot part.

do Gongys require the same precaution?

I know mesh is okay for both I assume the softer fiberglass type window screening from home depot is fine for both?

If I were you and you are concerned about the tarsus matter, at Target and other stores there is a roll of carpet or drawer liner in the size of 18" x 48" for about $3-4. This can be cut to the right size and glued and/or sewn into position. It is far and away the finest thing. There is a spongy characteristic to it that makes it the best. I found mine at a store called "Big Lots".

I am in So Cal so we have BigLots too.

I have drawer liners (I am pretty sure I got them at Dollar Tree) I like to think they slightly hold moisture too

I was entertaining the idea of picking up some Idols and building a wood frames metal screen enclosure but suspending a fiberglass screen (or drawer liner) from the top for them to hang from.

Would they (Idols) climb up the metal screen on the side even if branches and maybe even cork board were provided?

And If i make one for Idols maybe just make 2 and use one for gongys which was the reason for my question.

So advice being taken, what are the specific problems that can occur with Idols & metal screen, and do those same concerns apply to gongys?

Well the 2 rules I stick by are never use glue and never use metal mesh for these guys. They WILL find a way to kill themselves. I would say pick up an exo-terra for idolos.

no glue or no hot glue? i use hot glue for everything

but yes exo terra is the way to go...if you are trying to stay cheaper craigslist them, you will prolly find some. i have 4 of them...2 from petsmart, and the other 2 12x12x18 for 30 each on craigslist :D

They do fine on mesh. What I do, it is kind of interesting, is get a multiple large scyamore leaves and hot glue them to the top of the cage. It is layered and gives them plenty of gripping surfaces! But I wouldnt recommend it because it does become some what of a hassle ;)

Sorry doh! I meant tape. Be careful with glue though it can still be sticky.

I wouldn't recommend metal for any mantids. It greatly reduces the longevity of any mantids' tarsi, which can be especially bad for those species who only use their tarsi to grip (all Empusidae, including Blepharopsis, Idolomantis, and Gongylus).

I have metal screens in my exo terras, but I cover it with the foamy stuff used under place mats.

+1.

Even if Gongy's don't NEED it, it's still a much better way to go. They wander around... a lot!
