As I was unlocking my front door tonight, I looked to my side and on the edge of the door was a Grizzled Mantis. I believe it is a female as her wings are short and her abdomen is pretty wide. My question is ( as I of coarse scooped her up) what are the chances she has already mated?

If you find a wild adult female the chances are 99.9% she's fertile. If only it were so easy in captivity.

Don't get your hopes too high. A friend of mine's Purple-Winged female was found in the wild but unfortunately not mated. We figured this out on the basis of how long it took her to lay an ooth. Had she been fertile, she would have laid it alot sooner. That's a good determinant. So, we were unlucky to fall into that 0.1%.

Fingers crossed though.

James.

Thanks Guys!!! I'll let you know if i'm lucky. If I am your more then welcome to have a few. Just gotta tell me how to ship.lol

I know it is warmer there but would they be adults already? I say if she has just molted she may not be mated. In any case go find a male.

That sounds very small for an adult Gonatista.
It does. Mantids are just now hatching around here so I can't imagine they have already reached adult in FL. Can you post a pic of it?
