Hello , new to the forum : Had one week experience with wild caught Chinese Mantis

Hello , y'all , nice to meet y'all

I had a wild caught Chinese Mantis I had for a week , but had to let her go. I didn't want to , but she was getting home sick and wasn't eating. So I let her go back out where she belonged.

She was female( could tell by the number of segments in her belly)

During her stay with me, I fed her live crickets ..

Here she is. ( these pics were when she was with me) I don't have her currently . Back in the wild.

I put her in these critter keeper with a bush katydid .. Going for the strike

She made her catch:

I named her Solomon

She seems to have a reflector on her forehead, and at night her eyes got black

Thanks y'all !! I thought females were smaller and the males were larger !! Someone told me if the segments on the belly were 6 it was female

Welcome.

Lengthwise they are about the same but females are much bulkier and males are more petite. With adults you don't need to count segments as you can tell just by looking at them what the gender is. But yes, females have six segments on the venter.

Welcome. I had a similar experience. My wild caught Chinese mantis went through about a week of depression too. but after that she loved her new home and constantly being fed. She lived a full life after that. And yeah, I'd say pretty much always the females are larger.
