So I don't know how the topic came around a few weeks ago, but I just got the idea in my head that I haven't seen a praying mantis since I was about 6. The very next day, after talking to my gf about that random thought that popped into my head, I saw this little guy on my back porch.

I let the little Thesprotia graminis go (I think that is what it is, I am very new to this and only found that out after a little research), but the bug stayed with me. Now, 2 weeks later, I can't get praying mantids out of my head and I need to get into this hobby.

Any suggestions would be helpful, I am just looking for an easier to care for, wider temperature/humidity tolerance (I live in South Carolina but may need to travel a lot), larger mantis that I can feed on a daily basis.

Thanks for reading!

- Andrew

Welcome. :)

Nice find!

I found an adult female not too long ago and discovered that Thesprotia graminis care is much easier than I thought. My girl has laid many oothecae that hatched small but easy to raise nymphs. They are tough little buggers despite their delicate looks and have a good survival rate compared to other species that I have raised.

However, there are many nice large species to choose from. Most of the "big green types" ( like Sphodromantis or Hierodula) are pretty tolerant to a basic mantid care regimen.

Welcome to Mantis Forum, Andrew. Fairly new myself.

You didn't find her. She (if it is) found ..... you.

I think that as long as you stay away from the very difficult species that are usually from far away places you will be fine. You cannot go wrong, especially with one of the many indigenous species. Welcome to the Forum from CA.

Thanks everyone. I am leaning heavily toward a ghost from mantid_mike. I am really looking forward to owning a mantid.
