i have never mated a mantis before, and i have a congo pair i need to mate. the female is on her 4th ooth and the male has mated 3 females before. its all going wrong im so nervous about him getting eaten.

1st attempt:

he got on her and she reacted badly to it and tryed grabbing him. i sprayed them and put a stick in the way and he ran off.

2nd attempt:

he ran behind her and believe it or not attacked her!

3rd attempt:

he got on top of her. looked like it was going to happen. didn't do anything for 5 mins then just walked off her.

:(

my guess is you need to wait after every attempt to try again or get them situated in another location or something!

Think about this, is this the last female to mate? If so then he is expendable. Some females are not going to accept the male willingly. When u interfere for whatever reason, u then stop the procedure and miss out on the mating, second, he did not attack her, they usually are pretty rough when attempting to mount the female and usually make quite a ruckus, and third, he may want to do it, but is getting old and this is not that important to him anymore. All of this could be wrong, but it is what I am thinking.

I think she ment this is her first time breeding any mantis species. The previous owner breed the male 3 times prior to her recieving it. This is her first and only male. If i'm correct? Then he is not expendable in this case.

yeah thats right :)

thanks for the advice guys!

ill try again in a day or 2.

Use my guide. I doubt he attacked her. More than likely it was mating behavior. You don't need to spray them to seperate them. Just use your hands. Often if the female is like that I will just try to block her front legs as he mounts.

If your to afraid to use your hands, then may i suggest you purchase a pair of tongs. You could use those to seperate them incase things get out of controll.

i just put my hand infront of her :p

i tryed them again this morning with a different female.

he just doesn't seem interested.
