Does that mean that they are the same species and able to interbreed, or that they are just similar?
It means those two names mean the same thing. It means that they were called that but they changed the name and now they are called Hierodula patellifera.

Okay. Do some people call a mantis in Taiwan Hierodula patellifera? On mantodea.speciesfile.org says that the name was changed to Hierodula patellifera and that it used to be Hierodula bipapilla and H. dispar and H. manillana and H. manillensis, H. raptoria. So it seems like it was called many names. It seems like the name Hierodula bipapilla stuck. Here look at all of this. Weird that there are no subspecies listed... so I guess there are no subspecies of H. patellifera.

Hierodula bipapilla in China we call Shuang Tu Futang(futang means hierodula), (shuang tu means doble dots)

Hierodula patellifera is Guang Futang

Hierodula bipapilla only has 2 yellow dots on each front arm while patellifera has 3

Interesting. I kind of doubt that the Shuang Tu Futang is Hierodula bipapilla. Are the Shuang Tu Futang said to be Hierodula bipapilla on many websites (I mean internet)?

I think the Shuang Tu Futang are not Hierodula patellifera and are another species but maybe they are a subspecies of of Hierodula patellifera and are different from the ones we know of. I think that because on Mantodea.speciesfile.org Hierodula bipapilla is listed as a synonym of Hierodula patellifera.
