I never took latin, I always struggle with latin names.

How do I pronouce this name?

Hierodula multispina

Hi Roe Due La Multi Spee Na ???

If you want to pronounce it like real latin, it would be more like:

Hero do la Multi shpee na (with the "Do" just like in "to do something" and with the "sh" like in "short" or "shorts" or "shore" and with the two "a"s like in "fart" or "far"). And you have to roll the "r" in Hero, which is difficult for english speakers.

My only comment is that's a great question! I really struggle and most people would probably think I sound like an ignorant redneck when I pronounce these things incorrectly!

Totally agreed!!! I love it when I am corrected by pronouncing species names. I even pronounced Tazania wrong! Chris P corrected me lol.. With most mantid species I struggle, not just cause I stutter but those different tongues are very hard to produce!

I roll R's like it's my job though lol, I love making bizarre noises with those R's being rolled, I am a loud goofy mofo most of the time hahaha..

Panther chameleon locales were so silly to say the correct way at first.

Example: The locale Nosy Be, most folks pronounce it like Nosy, as in saying nose with just a y at the end, and with the be, most folks pronounce it like bee as in the flying honey bee... But be is actually pronounced "bay" as in "i went crabbing down at the bay today" ;)

new language, culture, etc. is so dang interesting!! love this forum!

Lol...I love it. I got my son a Latin course several months ago, while we were still homeschooling...the teacher on the video says there IS no incorrect way to pronounce Latin words (since, after all, it hasn't been a functional "spoken" language for thousands of years)...not sure about that statement, though, as it has been used by the Church since...well, since Roman times! Though, she does go on to tell you how to pronounce Latin words. :p (Also, she was VERY redneck-sounding! I think she was from Alabama or something! Too funny.)

I think, if anything, German should be used to "create" names for these guys...the Germanic languages are great for finding descriptive terms to use as names! i.e. Erdbeeren = Literally, Berries of the Earth...Strawberries! :D

Latin? humm, I believe is Greek Hiero...King Hiero of Syracusa, yes a Greek name to an ancient italian nobleman. Now if its origin is latin then do not pronounce the H, or what is callled a mute H, used today in many romantic languages: Spanish,Italian, Rumanian...etc. Do not roll the r, only if is at the begining of the word or is a double rr then you do. If a single r is in the midle of a word is just pronounced labiodentaly. Hierodula ' <earodula>.

Now what is the meaning of dula, a nurse? <_<
