How did this happen? I started out with a gift of one female Orchid, about 3 months ago, Now I've somehow got 6 Lobata's, 4 Dessicata's, 1 Brunner's, 5 Orchids, 7 stick insects, 2 carnivorous Katydids, Giant Grass Mantis, 4 Creo's, 1 Giant Asian, 1 h. majuscula, 6 African Twigs Mantids, 4 Ghost, 1 Violin, and thats just half,!!! I have just as many if not more at a friends, including the spiders, and vinegaroons, etc.

This has become a sickness, lol I'm wondering how alot of you other members got started, and how, and if your hobby has escalated and maybe gotten out of hand. How did you all get your start.

The problem is I love it. I wonder if theirs a Mantis Anonymous Meeting somewhere.

Wait till all the babies pop out, hahahaha.

Hope everyone had a great weekend

Brandon

Trust me, its a disease! I started out with one budwing one week. In 6 months, I had to buy a new shelf for 30 new mantids.

I think the limit of acquisition is up to one's space, excitement, and funds. Just ask some of the more prolific breeders and you will see that some have entire rooms filled with mantid, incubating oothecae, feeder insect cultures. It is an illness. I nice one.

Yea, at least they take up less room and less smell than all the reptiles I had. It's such a relief to not have any lizards, and snakes to take care of. I had a room that was full of them. I guess, now it'll be a mantis and bug room, lol

Haha it is addictive :) I started with 1 and now I have a mantis room full of containers, humidifiers, heat sources and of course mantids :)

The problem is the stupid internet! Everyday someone is finding something new, and pointing out something new and something different to me. There are too many kool mantids out there! lol

I'm sure I'll get there, but I'm taking my time. I want to make sure I can adequately take care of the ones I have before I start adding more. I also need to figure out something about space. I like nice looking set-ups even if they're not necessary. To me, there is no point unless they can be displayed nicely in big comfy homes.

as someone that had this "disease' back in 2007, my advice to you is to not overextend yourself or you will get burnt out. i just started keeping them recently again and i have to keep reminding myself not to make the same mistake again. it's really hard though. unless it's a super super rare species, you will be able to find them again some time in the future.

Yea, it's easy to rationalize that way. Were all fairly reasonable people. It's when your at a show, and there's a new cool looking little dude in your hands, that you lose all reason, hands start shaking, can't reach into your wallet fast enough! lol lol

uh oh, what new species did you get at the show?

I got a G. gongylodes, H. membranacea, D. dessicata, D. lobata, Budwing, not sure which one, Brunner's, Rhombodera Stalli, and the oddball, Carrnivorous katydids, and Orb Spider wheeew! lol

maybe my question should have been, what species didn't you get? lol

I absolutely love R stalli sp.

I must regretfully inform you that there is no cure for mantisitis.... I'm sorry...

I probably have a different story than most members because I started keeping mantids when I was about four. I can remember when I was ten I had four mantids, which seemed like a lot. This spring I had about 800! I got rid of most of those, but I still have mantids' containers hanging from yarn taped to the ceiling in the living room (so that the ants can't get them); some mantids in my room; and 13 ghost mantids, and 15 praying mantids plus some fruit flies on the dining room table. My mom puts up with a lot!

Good grief!

When will there be a show here?!?!?! :D

I enjoy the relaxed ownership that comes with only having 1-3 at a time. Currently however I have five keeprs, Abra, Kadabra, Zombie, Hex, and Taboo. :surrender:

I do manage to put my foot down before things get too out of hand. Five tends to be the max I will let my numbers stray.
