i just been reading feeding flower mantis crickets is a big no no?and i have been doing this for few weeks now..i have flys about to hatch but i was wondering..do u think thats why 1 of mine died yesterday and do u think the rest wil be ok until a few days when my flys hatch...why cant they eat them..to high in protein or something?

No, it's perfectly fine for a temporary meal. It's just that something too much of anything is bad. (Like if you feed them that their whole life, their ootheca may be very small, or malformed because of minutrition.) Also, the crickets have been known to fight back. About the mantis with three legs, I told you it might die. Not sure exactly of it's your fault. Too bad. :(

P.S. No, I don't think the temperature led to its' death, and 72 is fine. I have kept my mantises from 70 up and no casualties, they hunt normally, eat normally, and reproduce normally.

P.S.S. Read your topic a little better, and no, they can't die from eating the same thing over and over again...Just not as nutritious.

ok thanks for clearing that up buddie,,

Mine eat crickets quite frequently actually.
Yes, so did mine, not for a long time though. Just that variety is better, especially with ootheca laying females. Read somewhere that from eating only crickets, the ootheca didn't form properly or something. I guess it was missing some key nutrients found in pollinating insects.

It may be okay from time to time, but I would still attempt to feed flower mantids with flying insects only - because otherwise it may backfire. I even had a situation with my mantids vomiting after some... well, for the lack of term... crawling insects - so keep them stuffed with what they like best - every mantis will love a fly or a moth, crickets are not their usual menu.

They will vomit when they eat a bad crawling insect. Moths generally don't go 'bad' because they only feed on pollen, but crickets feed on garbage and other stuff so bacteria builds. They don't vomit unless they eat a bad insect that has loads of bacteria in the gut.

Yeah, I usually go outside to catch a couple of moths and skippers because my fly stores are still in pupa and in a bust cycle.
