I caught a spider the other day and i have been keeping it, i was wondering what species it is.

It's an orbweaver of some kind and looks like a female. Try searching through Bugguide.net under the genus Araneus. There is a staggering amount of variation in Araneus diadematus, but that doesn't look like my encounters with the species.

I set those free in my basement to catch any loose flies! Make great natural fly catchers!

If you do decide to free range them, they'll without a doubt spin a web to their full potential size! In the dark, I would shine a black light if I were you to get every detail of their web! It is MAGNIFICENT!!!

it is a common garden orb weaver. They are common in the southeast. As fact i have about 10 in my yard, lol.

 
i like the other orb weavers around here, i think that these are ugly. has anyone noticed that it looks like he/she is pulling the sign out of his/her mouth. :helpsmilie: ?
