Here's the african mantis I bought. Hatched in august and I got it from petland. Anyone know what type it is?

It has also refused to eat its crickets and Im getting worried

The guy at petland didn't really tell me anything about its molts or anything.

They fed it crickets there but Godfrey refuses to eat, he just punches the crickets off the branch.

Looks like my Asian Giant, but pic not macro enough.

If he is hungry he will eat the crickets.

I'm not sure what mantis that is but have you tried feeding him moths, my mantids love them compared to crickets and grasshopers. Why does Everyone have better pet stores than me to go to? The places in my town have no mantids, fruit flies, or good stuff. One has crickets but their containers are way dirty and I don't know what they feed them so I just catch bugs myself.

if you live in a small town then . . . not going to be great inventory. Im from Surrey which is officially a city, and theres tons of stores and stuff. But petland only has small mantises.

Try very small food to start. A large cricket may be too much of a threat. They will be easier for him to catch if you remove the jumping legs. Catch some flies or moths also.

Interesting pale mantid whatever species it is.

Looks a bit like a Miomantis species. They can be an African species.

that's exactly what mine looks like. How big do mio mantids get? Or are they always tiny and frail?

Mine hatched in august so will he get much bigger?

Also I feed him the smallest size of crickets.

Looks like Miomantis to me too!

Here's one of ours:

They are also called "Egyptian Mantis"...Egypt is IN Africa (the continent). They don't get very large...they are a small-sized mantis, maxing out at 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches. But, supposedly they are long-lived. Feed him hydeis...that's what ours seem to prefer. If you're using crickets, they'll need to be TINY! (The size of a large fruit fly.)

Congrats & Good luck! He's a handsome devil!

I did some study work and Godfrey is a Miomantis paykullii , you guys were right. And fantastic news, he ate his first cricket today!! ( while I was at school to miss it ) . I think he's finally settled in. Im purchasing a malaysian shield mantis this weekend. How big do they get?
