Caught this when one of the girls was in a bad mood...

For whatever reason the videos post pretty small here. If you want more detail watch it at YouTube.

It's pretty clear they flatten their wings, spread them slightly, then rub a leg over ridges along the underside of the rim. If you rub your finger over it you can feel the ridges. Many times they hiss simultaneously. At one point she misses rubbing her leg and you can clearly hear the hiss on its own.

In case anyone was wondering they really don't hurt when they strike. You'll feel the needles on their claws but they don't strike with much force. I suppose they could bite if they had to but mine never have, even when I pick them up while attacking - I slide my hand underneath and spread my fingers so they have to grip my hand. It's pretty funny to see them all puffed up and realizing they are now standing on what they were threatening. They usually calm right down after that.

You can see her little Ghost buddy at the end of the video. She's gone now. :(

I think yourt ghost had a Heart attack.... and that threat pose, seems to be the reason why they were named Diabolicas

SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SPECIES!!! How can you look at something like an Idolo and believe in evolution (Never said you believed in evolution, just saying Idolos are one of the many animals that disprove it)? Something like an Idolo just does NOT come around by chance. AMAZING MANTIS!!! So cool how they make that hissing noise with their wings. Kinda like how crickets chirp.

Awesome as always plus a little extra, very good coverage of my favorite Mantis, Thanks for sharing that Great stuff !!! ;)

Haha I have the same thing happen. When I leave a female on a bush outside, suddenly she thinks she's tough
Very good observation, I found out myself as fact that natural sun light makes them all but go back to the wild caught on you, but its only temporary with mine.

Love it! My favorite pics are #4 and #6. The green and white stripes are one of my favorite things about Idolos. Your photos are AMAZING!!!

Thanks. I'd never seen any pics of the threat pose from the back so I took advantage of the opportunity to document it.
