I had to look two or three times, but it's official. My Iris oratoria ooth hatched last night. They are sooooo tiny. It is only the first wave, as I hear they hatch that way. There are a lot of nymphs from such a small ooth. I still have a larger one to hatch. Any recommendations from anyboby with these. I just can't get over how small they are. No use of even trying to take a picture

Ha, ha!

I didn't know for sure what I had when mine hatched, so I just treated them like Chinese. Very, very small Chinese. :)

I gave them melongaster ff's until they were larger enough for Hyeidi. I let them all go after that, so no help beyond that.

These guys may be small, but they are tough! :2guns: They can take D. melanogaster with out much of a problem! Also remember to keep these guys hot! They are a desert dwelling species.

well they can do fine in room temperatures too the ones I got from Ismart are doing good and are active somewhat!

Another burst last night. I definitely see them now. There are so many now. I'm afraid to open the cup. I'll just be blowing in mels for the time being. They just seem too tiny and fast for my aging senses. Get ready kids...Getting older stinks.

They are dinky!

I've used old cultures of mels that are making slightly smaller flies...hard to plan for though.

You can buy wild mel pupae from Chuck at SpiderPharm; they're a bit smaller than the flightless/wingless ones and lotsa fun. If you call on Thursday morning at 928-427-6589 you may get them on the coast on Sat,or Monday and ready to hatch at the latest.

BTW, about this getting old thing. How can you tell when its about to sneak up on you? :D

Great pics, and congrats. The good thing about dealing with them is that they can't climb glass. That makes for easy transfer and opening jars assuming you don't have climbing structures that lead to the very top. Good luck!

I know this is a late, but I am thrilled to see that the ooths hatched for you! As stated they are small, but really tough and hungry beasts once they settle down.

My remaining ooths have not hatched yet, but I'm keeping them at room temperature. I'm sure they'll hatch by the end of the month.
