I found her yesterday (I counted 6 segments on her belly...that means it's a "her" right?) and am putting together a home for her right now. I think it's a Stagmomantis Californica but I just wanted to make sure I was right. I live in Sacramento, CA.

I will be putting her in a exo terra tank. It's 12X12X18 glass tank that opens in the front and has a screen top. I will be using a bedding that is a mixture of eco earth and moss on top of some small rocks. I will also be adding lots of things for her to climb on. Do you think that is an ok enclosure? She seems to be a full grown mantis.

Can you tell by the color? Sorry if I sound like a mantis noob lol but I am just curious as to how you can tell the two apart. I love bugs and have always loved mantids so I want to learn anything I can about them.

Just so you know, she won't be spending that much time on the bottom of the tank, but if you are adding stuff for decorative purposes, go right ahead ;) ....and you should post in the "introduce yourself"....welcome to the forum!

Hi, if you can find a male S. limbata, can you please message me?

That's definitely a limbata female, looks identical to mine, and like Agent A said, the black stripes is a give away, also the wing color.

Yes I can. I don't see very many mantids around here though.... it's been forever since I have seen one. I found this beauty when I was walking to the car with my boyfriend. She was just chillin out in the open on a stucco wall. No bushes around or anything. I almost missed her because the stucco was about the same color as her. I ran back up 3 flights of stairs, grabbed a mason jar, threw in some eco earth and a stick, and put her in. Now she is going to have a nice little setup in an exo-terra tank. I hope she likes it.

Nice pics of that limbata. Whenever I find mantids at my parents house, they're usually on a stucco wall as well. I noticed that stagmomantis californica like that surface to lay their ooths on.

Why thank you :)

Well, my whole apartment complex is stucco so I might go make myself look stranger then I already to my neighbors by eying every inch of stucco to find another one. My neighbors already look at me funny when I search bushes and wall corners for spiders and snails.

I know that feeling too. When I find a mantis during school in the pathway i move it to some bushes and ppl are like why did you pick it up its a bug? And i say why not help out something less fortunate than us (in size) because it cant fend for itself, and i dont want it to be stepped on.

I do that with snails all the time. If I go for a walk earlier in the morning right after the sprinklers go off there are snails everywhere on the sidewalk and I can't just leave them there.

So I finally named my baby girl. Her name is Aspasia ... it's greek and it means "welcome". I chose the name because she pretty much welcomed me into the world of owning mantis' as pets.
