I have one mantis and it's so annoying. It will never EVER go down to the bottom of the cage to look for food so I must take off the lid (which the mantis is gripping on to) and place either a small but active mealworm or a slow crippled cricket. This method of feeding can take up to 10 minutes just for it to grab it's food. I'm not gonna be getting much more if they are all like this little bugger. Anyone else have a mantis like this???

just throw the food in the tank and leave it for a bit..as long as u only throw in 1 cricket it will be fine..come back after 30 mins if he hasnt eaten it hes not hungry.rember the mantis will only go for moving food..is the meal worm hiding?

Yes, the mealworms will burrow and I think the problem is that it can't see the crickets down at the bottom of the cage. I'll see what happens if I just drop a cricket in. Once I was away for like 2 days and came back expecting my mantis to be thin but it was at the bottom of the cage and was pretty tubby.

remember if it stops eating its going to shed..also are u talking about the tank in your avatar?if so i used them when i 1st started..what i use to do is take the lid off with him hanging on it..then lift the lid the right way up and throw the cricket in front of him..he would grab it then i would put the lid back..get some sweetie jars them tanks are not very good..they take up to much space which the mantid dont use.also if u get small species your be feeding fruit flys and with tank they will fly out,,with sweetie jars u have netting and elastic band over top.

Thanks MJ. I'm trying to get either a Griffin Mantis or a Blue Winged Mantis from Graham (sent him an email yesterday) and I have a sweetie jar which had stick insects in them before. I'll use that and get some cloth and rubber bands. ;)

P.S. Do you have any species at all for sale?

Mantis are ambush predators, in other words they wait for food to come to them.

A meal worm on the bottom of the tank is not going to go any where near a mantis at the top of the tank, crickets tend to be more nocturnal than diurnal and may not get seen/caught either.

Try blue bottles they really reach the mantids that other live foods dont reach :)

Akward? hah more like normal mantis behavior. Most Mantises prefer to perch up on something and avoid the ground. Perhaps you might want to try getting a screen/mesh cage. I like them because they are easy for the mantis to cling to so they don't just hang on the celling but will skitter along the walls a lot more since it is easy for them to grip. The grip also allows crickets and other prey items to in turn easily crawl up to the mantis. Makes feeding a breeze.

The activity of hunting can also very between mantis species, gender, and even individual personality. I keep mostly Chinese mantises and most are pretty active in hunting, especially full grown females. I have a 50/60 gallon tall screen cage and had one female who would race from the top of it down to the bottom and around the cage to catch crickets. She had no patience for sitting and waiting for her dinner to come to her.

As for blue bottle flies, you might be able to get some from an exotic pet store (if you have any around you) but your best bet would probably be to order some off the internet.

Provide a stick or something for the cricket to crawl up to the mantis.
