My latest trip to Japan was this past October and November to visit family. We were site seeing on the island of Kyushu. I was eating a snack and went to throw away the empty bag. I looked down in the trash bin and found that a Mantis had fallen in. I went ahead and rescued it and placed it in a nearby bush. A butterfly cocoon was also in the bush as well. I didn't notice it until after I snapped the picture. Anyways, anybody know what kind of Mantis this is? It was about 4-5 inches in length. I remember the Mantis that I caught as a boy being green. Do they change color with the seasons?

Hi.

The mantis belongs to the genus Statilia, there is some likelihood that it is S. maculata. The butterfly cocoon is no cocoon but a hawk moth larva (Sphingidae).

Greetings,

Christian

Looks like she just laid an ooth. It appears there is some of the foam on her abdomen.
