My B. Mendica's abdomen and head had clear liquid on them a little bit earlier... I soaked it up with the corner of a paper towel and she seemed quite vexed by it... I had misted the plants earlier, but it almost looked like it was coming from between her plates on the abdomen. This sound familiar?

Hi Kaddock,

I had an adult female R. basalis who was very fat and wouldn't eat after a stint of mating. She first had diarrhea, and then started leaking clearish/green fluid from her bottom AND from between several places in between the last plates in her abdomen. She died shortly after. I really don't know what happened to cause her ailments. There's a possibility she could have been dying of old age. But I'm also beginning to suspect that she ate an overlarge meal (her mate, Harry... who has mysteriously vanished ever since) and it was too much for her already fat abdomen to handle.

Don't know if anything in there is similar to your situation. But I hope your girl has a better prognosis. ;)

If this is indeed true that she suffered this injury as a result of a huge meal then it may prove some members wrong on the issue about a year or so back. The idea of a mantid eating itself to the point of engorgement was debated a while back and the concensus was that they know when to stop. A member had a similar problem after leaving a tank full of BBs I believe and the mantid ate them all and was found with liquid as well as greenish fleshlike substance hanging from her side. He took pics of it and it looked like she did truly burst but it was doubted the meal did it. I personally think anything is possible!!! This may have truly happened to your mantid after eating it's mate. Does this not get on your nerves the way they can just suddenly turn on each other for the sake of getting a quick meal? I had this same thing happen yesterday. Went to check on my babies and they had been sharing a tank for two months now without incident. It seemed as if it waited until the other went into molt and attacked and ate her. I caught him still munching on her abdomen. My neighbor's kids were here at the time and were like "drown him or crush his head or just kill him some way for that!"I gotta admit I was right there man, almost over the edge in anger because i just fed them both last night to the point of fatness! So, he did not have to eat her like that ...then the idea of the nature of the thing kicked in and i left him alone. Still, I'm a bit pissed!!

Sorry about the one who got eaten by the other one. I caught one of mine eating another one and know the feeling! (http://mantidforum.net/forums/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=30&showentry=247).

I still haven't come to a conclusion about what caused Michelle's (the female R. basalis) symptoms and death. Harry (her mate) never has surfaced since they mated and he disappeared. I thought sure I would have found him by now if not eaten. It's not a big room and the door is always kept shut except for when I enter and exit , and vents are covered with escape-proof organza. And we did intensive searches of the entire room several times. But no wings/legs or any debris like that of him were found either. But I do know Michelle had serious internal abdominal issues right afterwards, and appeared to have "burst" her seams. So I just don't know.
