Arrg. Poor Nikki Mantis. Tonight she lost the full tibia of a rear leg.

One of the crickets laughed and called her "stumpy."

So I flushed it down the toilet.

Lousy watching her slowly fall apart.

One of the first mantids that I raised from an oothecae to adult was the same species. I knew she was getting old when she dove for a feeder and one of her legs just snapped off in the process. She was laying on her side, and nom-nomming her prey until she righted herself.

I was shocked and horrified at what had happened. Mostly at the fact that the funny mantis didn't seem to notice that her leg had snapped off.

Yes, Rockness, she, otherwise seems to be okay. She's still ambulatory and can hang upside down. And as long as her raptor claws are functioning (which they are), at least she can eat without a problem. I'm guessing she's about 8-9 months old.

Sorry Digger. I know how much you enjoy having Nikki around, and it must be tough to watch her falling apart.
Yes Tammy - it's a bit scary and depressing. Entropy. It's part of everything. Watching Nikki makes me think if I get to her age. Will my tibia fall off?? Will I still be capable of hanging upside down? :(
