I have about a dozen fertilized Ooths and noticed a nymph emerging from one of them. I have the Ooth on a stick and was wondering if I have Ooth in the wrong position. Should the nymph's head be pointing downward or when emerge do they emerge with their head pointing upwards.

As well, are the nymphs instantly active or do they a need a few hours. This is the first nymph and outside of emerging it hasn't moved after an hour or so. I can take a pic if need be.

Thanks

Please post a picture of ooth/nymph(s). It will help to better answer your questions. If on stick you would most likly want the stick side up. You should be able to look up hatchings on utube, to get better idea on ooth position.

It should be pretty obvious which orientation an ooth should be in. One nymph emerging is a bit odd but some mantids hatch over time while most burst hatch. After an hour a nymph should be moving. They normally hatch and are mobile within seconds.

I don't have a lot of pics of ooths on hand, but "Ooth: Right Side Up" would be a good thread. Just pics of zipper-side down ooths of different species.

These are M.Religiosa Ooths....I have brought 5 indoors to attempt to have them hatch a little early. Only 1 Ooth has shown any signs of activity, 1 nymph emerged 3/4's of the way and died. Another emerged this morning but it's legs seemed to be all tangled up so it's not going to make it. I have seen several videos where multiple nymph emerge and start cruising around the Ooth....this is not the case for me.

Perhaps these 2 little guys are just a little premature or something. Religiosa Ooths are similar to a packaged loaf of bread with the bottom of the loaf bag being the down-end and where the opening of the bag is being up-end.

Number 3 emerged, cute lil fella but it seem like one back leg is stuck on the Ooth. He been out now for about 2 hours now but just can't seem get that back leg loose. I took a needle tip and moistened the are (far less than a drop) to see it will help. I'm hanging a wetted paper towel in the housing to keep the moisture level up.

All in all....very cool watching them come out!

Oh well, guess I'll just have to see where how it goes over the next couple of days.

Update 5/31... So I am averaging 1 a day. The first nymph emerged and died still attached to the Ooth, the following day a 2nd nymph emerged but was disfigured, still alive though, yesterday a fully formed popped out and was quite mobile after about 20 minutes. It certainly wasn't the explosion I thought would happen by any means.
