Found these two guys/gals on my deck this afternoon. One beige-brown and one grey-charcoal. They were very lethargic and climbed onto my finger as if hypnotized. And they very much resisted leaving said finger (did they like the warmth?). Does anyone know what they are? I fear these beauties will end up as gourmet meals for two of my mantids.

Sphinx moths (sphingidae) of some kind and possibly a breeding pair if they were together. They often have very pretty eye spots on the underwings if you push the top set back.

Thank you Peter and Branc. I also sent pix and a note to Dan Marlos. Maybe he'll post and narrow down the ID. Branc, although Enyo lugubris can range this far north (and farther) - aren't they larger than these guys?

Posting the photos on Bugguide.net is the easiest way to get unusual things identified. Just click on the ID Request tab, fill out a bit of info. on the form about your location and date and then upload the photo.

Yup, did that Peter. That's the "Dan Marlos" cited. Turned out to definitely be Deidamia inscriptum.
