Lucky me :D

One of my Gambian oothecae hatched out 8 wee babies today and my husband found a Chinese ootheca while doing yard work! Don't be jealous.

It's my birthday... it's my birthday... it's my birthday!

Seriously though, I ordered those beastly springtails for the Gambians, but don't expect them until later next week. I don't think they can take these hopping melanogaster (my current cultures "hop" like crazy). I know they're not ready to eat, but I put some of these ff in just to see. The ff were running and hopping and the Gambians were scrambling for their lives! Any ideas? Maybe wait a couple of days and refrigerate the ff a bit before offering them?

Yay. Happy birthday! :D

Congrats on the babies, and I hope you get more. The hatchlings aren't supposed to eat for at least 2 days. They just won't eat until then. Plus, if they are really hungry, they can always eat the weak ones. If Nigerian hatchlings can eat melanogaster, I'm sure Gambians can.

Happy birthday!!!

My gambian didn't catch food until the 4th day. Its eating melongaster or whatchamaspellit.

Melagonaster 8)

Take the fruit flys out because due to the nymphs being so young all the activityof the FF's will stress the nymphs which may make them die :? , mine ate on the 4th day 2 :p

It wasn't really my birthday, just felt like it. Yup, I took the ff out immediately. Big mistake. Tried to photo the babies today, too small for my camera! I'm not going to feed them for another day or too. Maybe by then the springtails will be here. Otherwise I'm going to chill those melanogaster in the fridge...take the hop out of them for a few minutes. :)

The D. melanogaster are not too big for the gambian nymphs. I started feeding my nymphs on their 3 rd day. They had had absolutely no trouble eating the flies. And I am raising about 75 gambian nymphs.

TOM

Thanks Tom! I'm sure you're right, however this particular culture is more active than I typically find them to be AND they hop! Also, they are flightless but winged so they are a bit larger (intimidating?). I've watched my Nigerian L3 strike and miss because they hop. I had 4 Nigerian nymphs. I lost one to a bad moult, but the others just sat in one spot until they keeled. It could just be keeling nymphs but I suspect the active, jumping nature of this culture is too much for some individuals. They are like jumping beans! I hate them. The cultures I started from them are the same (of course) but no problem for my Unicorns. I ordered a new culture of ff. You need some new genes sometimes. :)

Just so you know the D. melanogaster I use are winged also but flightless. And yes they hop like mad. But that hasn't stopped my little guys/gals from chowing down on them.

And yes, new genes are always good.

Take care,

Tom
