Nice shots there. I am too cheap (at this time) to buy a good macro lens for my Nikon. Maybe I will want one in the future, especially with people showing off their mantis's.

They are the cutest crickets / that is the cutest cricket i have seen. I always thought they were really ugly, i had never seen one up close. I still don't like them :D .

Hmmm did not know that, thanks for the info .... 1:1 is still good when you can get very close to them, though had I been going for macro photog I can see where my camera choice could pose a problem.

Once I get the replacement Mantis's in, I will shoot a couple shots with my camera. Mainly to test them as I have not taken any close up shots of flowers or insects and it will be fun to give it a try. Just try to not laugh TOO much at my first attempts. hehehehe

DSLR ... Nikon D80 .. I have the kit 18-135 lens .. a 24mm lens and the Sigma 50-150 lens .. I plan to shoot with each of them to see how they do.

edit: shoot some of the mantis ... i have used the lens's on other things ;-)

No problem, both Nikon and others make both bellows and extensiontubes, to get closer than 1:1. Personally I use some Kenko extensiontubes on my macrolens for Nikon (a Sigma 105mm)

With bellows you can get as close as with the Canon MP-E65 :) ,but with a bit more plundering. I offcourse would wish Nikon made someting similar to that lens, but I get by without though. As a standard 1:1 macro lens is what you get the most use for ! U can even use it for everday photographing, don't see you taking full head shots of poeple with the MP-E65 :)

well the lenses u have arnt no good for what u want..u ned a fixed macro lens..100mm / 105mm /50mm / 60mm..if u have a lens like 50-150 its not going to be 1:1..True macro..your need a lens like this buddie.

http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/produc...ea23388b36b3696

your be better of with this..with 105mm youre get same close up as with a 50mm its just your have to be 2x further to get same shot with 100mm or 105mm...both lens will give u 1:1 at full lenth..

i have a nikon d50 with sitgma 50mm macro lens and sigma macro ring flash.as well as canon set up for past 1:1

thats why i have 2 rigs.Bugs dont like to wait around so i havenyt got time to change lens

nikon d50 - 50mm sigma macro lens - sigma macro ring flash

canon 400d - mpe-65mm - canons mt-24ex macro flash

i have bellows and all tho u can get close u havent got control with aperture on your camera and also when that happens u cant use the flash in ttl mode..this is why i spent 1500£ on my canon set up....but tbh most dont need to go past 1:1 any way so as long as u have a good fixed macro lens and mayby set of kenko tubes it wil; be fine..oh and a good macro flash or normal flash on bracket.

PS : It's not the camera that take the pics, it's the photographer, together with the lens that is ;)
hmm i would say its 30% me 70% the set up i use..canons 400d with the mpe-65 and the mt-24ex is made for dummies like me...the only down side to this lens is u have to be about 1-3inchs away from the insect when taking a pic..my prey mantis has taught me stalking techniques so im starting to get some great shots..
