I'm not sure what to make of this, and I totally screwed Jude in the process(her tau is on her way to meet him with expensive express shipping).

My male Taumantis stopped eating after he mated with my female. He died 4 days later. He wasn't even three weeks old. I know that not many keep this species, but have you ever heard of mating activated some kind of suicide switch in a male mantis? I'm so confused right now.

Sometimes mating is sooo stressful for males that too much adrenaline and excitement from mounting and connecring does it's toll on the males and they die shortly after...happened with my T sinensis a while back...

Sorry for your loss :(

This just goes to show that not everything is known about these creatures yet; we all still have a long way to go...

I've never raised a male from sub to adult and bred him, so on the others I couldn't be sure of the age. But this has happened to me with Popa spurca and Carolina mantises. I'm not sure if I'm Doug something writ, but they mate and then they stop eating and die.

agent A had this happen with either a popa or creo male, I can't remember which.

However, you can say this full heartedly: He had the ride of his life (pun intended).

how much food and water do you give the males before you mate them?

I had a male flower mantis that was raised from L1 and was super active, healthy, etc. After it became an adult, I waited about 4 weeks and then mated him with a female that was born at the same time.

After the mating, the male seem fine, active, etc. About 2 weeks later, it died. The female is still alive and well (been about 2 months since becoming an adult) and has laid 2 ooths and seems ready to lay another. Like you, I have no idea why the male died so soon.

I'm just a newbie but thought I would share the experience in case it helps. Sorry about your loss.

6 weeks doesn't seem exceptionally short of a male's life.

Mine was 2 weeks and 3 days old. :-(
