I tried to breed my Carolina pair today for the first time. My male noticed the female, went into a threat pose, went after and tried to hit her. He molted to adult July 1st. Could it be he is not in the mood?

Perhaps that is the case. I just recently got her. He was ready a month ago when he was after my hand. I hope I wasn't releasing any phermones.

Do you know when that female molted to an adult? Because that is my first thought is that she's not ready and he is just threatened by her. My male Carolina is apt to threat pose anything at any time. Feisty ones they are!

My male hasn't displayed a threat pose since he was at the instar before subadult. I thought it was strange that he did this today. I have tried several times to get him to display. I wanted to see his wings stand. I guess it takes a female's presence to make him show off. :D

Haha.. Mantis don't make a pose to show off like Peacocks do.. they do it because they feel threatened and will attack. lol! I usually get a threat pose out of my mantis with a few pokes to the head. Gradually increase the strength to see what it takes for them to flare up because you don't wanna do it so hard that you find it's head flying across the room like a home run hitter. I've also noticed that my females will flare up more than my males will.

 It was just a joke, kitkat. They are now mating! :D :D :D She seems to be nibbling his claws gently without mandibles showing. I hope he makes it. The connection was almost immediate. It wasn't violent, he just walked up and stepped on her head. She then struggled for a second, he grabbed around her neck,(he is big) and she tried to bite his claw. He then adjusted to a more comfortable grasp. She then calmed down and opened up.

Yay! Successful mating! I hope he makes it too. I might be a little distraught if my Carolina male doesn't make it through mating. Good luck!

my chinese was the same way but I threw in a large Carolina Grasshopper and the female took a bite but got a hold of it and I then put in the male and he quickly got on top of the female and they are still at it right now! I am just wondering now when the chinese female lays her ooths is it safe to put them outside right now and just leave them be till next year or not do that!

He made it! At 1:30AM I woke up and found her alone a foot away from where I left them mating. I couldn't find him at all. I Put her away and she started cleaning her genitalia. After I was almost back to sleep, the male landed in front of my face on my pillow. I then put him in his container. I have a small house so the only place I could let them be free is the bedroom. I will have to figure out another place, I was having trouble sleeping because I was afraid he would fly to the bed while I slept, and become crushed.

Congradulations on your first carolina mating! :) I hope she lays you many ooths! :)
